A Country Wedding

My youngest sister got married last weekend.
She had a beautiful country wedding, complete with a butterfly release {seen above} and vintage tablecloths.
There were wildflowers in mason jars and homemade cookies on the dessert table.
It was sweet, simple, and perfect.
I wish I would have taken more pictures, but I was too busy enjoying myself.

This is the rehearsal, but it shows the beautiful setting nicely. The ceremony and reception were held at the groom's family lake home.
 Caitlin and my niece, Dani, were junior bridesmaids. Caitlin had so much fun, and stuck to her big cousin like glue the whole day.
I am the middle child in a family of five girls. {I know. My poor father!} With all of life's craziness, it is nearly impossible to get us all together and, unfortunately, our oldest sister couldn't be there on Saturday.
But the rest of us managed to get a few sister photo-ops.
{The pointed toes are a family tradition.}
If it's hard to get all the sisters together for one shot, it is a complete impossibility to get all of our spouses, parents, and children in one photo.
I think we're still missing several people here, but it was the best we could do! Hopefully the professional photographer got some better shots. I kind of like these action shots, though. They give a much better feeling of our family reality, craziness and all.
Congratulations, again, Jacki and Jake. We love you!

WIWW: August, Week 4

It seems like this week flew by. Can it really be Wednesday already?!
Join me over at The Pleated Poppy for all the fun, motivation, and inspiration of What I Wore Wednesday.

I did pretty well taking pictures this week (a rarity). Let's take a look, shall we?
For the last several years, I have taught English and ESL classes at a local university. This week marks the start of the academic year and it kind of made me miss dressing up in my "teacher clothes." Even though I will be staying home to teach my son this year, there's no reason I can't still dress for my teaching job.  So I broke out the practical staple of every teacher's wardrobe: the cardigan.
Leopard cardi: Old Navy
Tee, trouser jeans: Target
Shoes: El Naturalista
Cardi, tee, shoes: Target
Jeans: Silver
I get a lot of questions about my hair, and I just wanted to take a second to give a shout out to Kate at The Small Things Blog. She has no idea I exist, but I follow her hair tutorials religiously (and her product recommendations, and her fashion and makeup advice). Seriously. She is my guru.
Case in point:
The Perfectly Pretty as shown by Kate on Monday
and The Perfectly Pretty as worn by me on Tuesday!
{note to self: work on reverse photography skills}

Up next is an outfit that seemed fun in theory, but in reality didn't pan out so well.
This skirt is actually a dress, a fact I may have been able to hide if it it hadn't crept up over the top of my belt and looked all weird.
I've been trying to use different, unexpected color combos, as well {see the orange flats in the above outfit} but I'm not sure this one worked. What do you think?
Tee, belt: Target
Dress/skirt: Old Navy
Slip Extender: The Slip Shop, Etsy
Shoes: Macy's
Necklace: Allora Handmade

Finally, Saturday was my baby sister's wedding and I searched long and hard for the perfect dress. I found a cute one, but it couldn't hold a candle to the one my grandma wore. She rocked a darling vintage dress that belonged to her mother. Isn't she beautiful? {My grandpa's pretty good lookin', too.}
On me:
Dress: Lands End
Shoes, necklace: Macy's
Belt: Target
Thanks for stopping by and have a great Wednesday!

Lingering Over a Sweet Little Girl Bedroom

Once upon a time, my daughter was a girly-girl.
She was all about the princesses, the pink, the froufrou.
{This picture slays me. Was she really this little?!}
But, now, not so much.
Gone is the pink. Gone is the tiara. Gone are the ballet slippers
Gone is the little girl.
In her place is an athletic, confident, book-lovin' tween.
The little girl's not all gone, though.
Caitlin has grown up faster than her bedroom has.
Like many girls her age, Caitlin still teeters between the worlds of childhood and teen-dom, but her bedroom still looks kind of little-girl. This was emphasized on a recent Saturday, when we cleaned out and organized her room.
We got rid of lots of old toys, but she was unwilling to part with many of her beloved stuffed animals and dolls.
The once-loved pink is still very much in evidence.
I snapped a few photos to commemorate not only this rare state of cleanliness, but to capture the last glimpses of her little-girlhood. {Like the Dora waste bin peeking out from behind the desk!}
Soon, we will be updating her room with curtains, bedding, and paint more suited to her current style.
{Stay tuned for a tween bedroom Pinspiration post!}
But for the moment, the pinky-sweet girlishness remains.
And I'm okay with that... even if she's not!

What I Wore: August, Week 3

Happy Wednesday and welcome back to What I Wore!
As always, I will be linking up at The Pleated Poppy.

We've been enjoying a return of {slightly} cooler weather recently, so I got to break out my jeans, scarves, and sweaters.
Scarf: Old Navy
Tee: LL Bean
Jeans: Silver
Flower Pin: The Pleated Poppy
Flips: Merrel

I shouldn't even include this one, as it's yawn-tastic.
Just keepin' it real.
Hoodie: the North Face
Jeans: Silver
Boots: Uggs

This was the Pinspiration for my next outfit.

It's a little on the monochromatic side; I will try and change up the bottoms next time.
{By change up, I mean wear jeans. See above photos.}
Sweater: Lands End
Khakis, tee: Old Navy
Flower Pin: Claire's

If you're keeping track, I obviously did not meet my 4-picture goal yet again this week.
I'm just gonna go ahead and admit defeat. Three days per week of non-paint splattered sweat pants is apparently all I can muster!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!

Custom Wedding Sign

My baby sister is getting married this Saturday.
It's hard to believe, since I vividly remember the day she was born!
{I am 10 years older than her.}
As part of her gift, I made a custom wedding sign.
I used a verse from the Song of Solomon and their wedding day.
I'm assuming she'll be too busy in the next few days to read my blog, so there's little chance of ruining the surprise!
It's my first attempt at something quite like this and the spacing is a bit off, but overall, I'm pleased.
I love words, quotes, lyrics {I'm an English nerd, after all} so I think I will continue to make things like this.
Congratulations, Jackie and Jake!

Pinspiration Friday

The last part of this week has been frustrating, at best.
The kids are quarrelsome and whiny.
My internet connection is sketchy and unreliable which means I am going to have to spend hours  on the phone with some IT guy.
My garage sale was a bomb, and it was entirely my own fault.
I thought I could save a bit of $$ by only advertising on Craigslist.
Not so much.
Lesson learned: I'll be giving it another try next week, with a proper ad in the local paper.
Long story, short: I could use a little pick me up.
So it's time for another edition of Pinspiration Friday, where I share some of my favorite eye-candy from the previous weeks.
You can follow me on Pinterest here.
From my style Pinboard~
I love this color combo; it's so cheerful.
But I'm also lovin' all the fall outfits that have been cropping up.
Look for copycat versions of these two in upcoming WIWWs.
And speaking of fall, I love fall recipes and comfort food.
Finally, just for the sake of some pretty, here are some of my favorite living room spaces:

I feel better just from soaking up all the positive Pinterest energy.
What are some of your favorite pins? I'd love to see them!
Comment with a link to your Pinboards!
Have a great weekend!

What I Wore: August, Week 2

It's Wednesday again, and that means I'll be linking up at
The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday.
I almost made it to my my 4-picture goal this week, but camping over the weekend kind of threw me off. And I was on my own for picture taking last week, since both kids were away at camp, so it was back to mirror self-portraits.

Kids at camp meant Chris and I got a date night. Woo-hoo!
What did we do on our hot date, you ask? We ran errands and ate at the Olive Garden.
I know. We're crazy like that.
Such a wild date deserved an equally wild outfit... so I broke out the khakis.
{Please note: heavy sarcasm in use.}
Tee, Khakis: Old Navy
Cami: Shade Clothing
Slides: Born {via a garage sale}
Sweater: Banana Republic
Tee: Target
Flower pin: Claire's
Capris: Lee
Wedges: Old Navy

I like empire waists: they are uber-comfy. But, upon viewing this picture, I have to say they are not altogether flattering. It looks a bit too maternity-wear for my taste...
What do you think?
Tee: Boden
Mom-capris: same as above
Flats: Target

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week!

What I Wore: August, Week 1

pleated poppy
Lindsay, at the Pleated Poppy, dreamed up What I Wore Wednesday to motivate and inspire other stay-at home moms to get out of their pjs and into some cute clothes, and for me, this week it totally worked.
I actually scraped up 4 non-yoga pants outfits!
{Reality check: I am fully aware that this is quite frivolous in the larger scheme of things, but I have fun doing it and feel better about myself as a result.}
Cardi, dress, leggings: Target
Headband: Anthro
Jewelry: Macy's

Peasant blouse: Calvin Klein
Capris: Kohl's
Earrings: Macy's

Scarf: Lands End
Tee: Target
Jeans: Silver

Cardi: Old Navy
Top: Target {and just so no one asks, it's not a maternity top, though you wouldn't know from looking at this picture!}
Jeans: Same as above {I'm lazy like that}

That's it for this week.
The kids are at camp till Friday this week and we're camping this weekend, so it's highly unlikely I will manage another 4 pics. I full intend to spend my kid-free time cleaning out closets and prepping for a garage sale. I know. It's a regular barrel of monkeys around here!
Have a great week and thanks for stopping by!
